9. Fred Beell
Born in Prussia during the late 19th century, Fred Beell’s family emigrated to the United States. Beell became a professional wrestler, traveling the United States. After serving in the Army during the Spanish-American War, he found his greatest in-ring success in 1906, defeating the legendary Frank Gotch (then American Heavyweight Wrestling Champion). Beell retired from the ring in 1919 to become a police officer. On August 5, 1933, Beell and his partner were responding to a burglary call when Beell was fatally shot in the head. He was 57.
